The Red Star
A Juneteenth-Inspired Whiskey Cocktail
The Red Star is a vibrant, easy-to-make cocktail that weaves together flavor and symbolism to honor Juneteenth. Crafted with Uncle Nearest—an iconic Black-owned whiskey brand paying tribute to Nathan Green, the enslaved master distiller who taught Jack Daniel the art of distilling—it combines rich whiskey with tangy hibiscus syrup, tropical pineapple juice, and a fizzy kick of spiced ginger beer.
The name “The Red Star” holds dual meaning: it references the cocktail’s deep ruby hue and the star on the Juneteenth flag, which symbolizes Texas (the last state to emancipate enslaved people and the birthplace of Juneteenth) and the freedom of enslaved African Americans.
